The Center of Excellence in Urban Planning and Design (CoEUPD) at the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) in collaboration with the Center for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) and Kozhikode Corporation will organize a workshop titled ‘Building a People-Centric Kozhikode’ for councilors on Thursday (2026, March 5) for councilors.
“This high-level strategic meeting is exclusively for councilors and senior city officials to enhance their understanding of contemporary urban planning. The curriculum addresses critical local challenges, including urbanization trends, mobility planning, practices in local areas and critical issues of wastewater and urban flood management,” PP Anilkumar, Professor, Department of Architecture and Planning, NIT-C and Chairman, CoEUPD, said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the establishment of CoEUPD at NIT-C was guided by the Union Budget 2022 directive to create four National Centers of Urban Excellence. After a rigorous two-year selection process, NIT-C became the representative for South India, joining an elite group of institutions that include School of Planning and Architecture Delhi, CEPT University Ahmedabad and IIT Kharagpur.
Supported by a grant of ₹ 250 crore from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, CoEUPD now serves as the national center for data-driven and citizen-centric sustainable development.
Focusing on resilience and people-centred development, the one-day workshop seeks to enhance informed decision-making and empower the corporation to steer Kozhikode towards a future that is both strategically planned and environmentally friendly.
The workshop will be organized by prof. Anilkumar, Prof. MA Naseer and Prof. K. Chithra of NIT-C’s Institute of Architecture and Planning and scientists TK Drissia and B. Vivek of CWRDM.
