At least nine people died after a bus overturned in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitarama Raju district on Friday, news agency ANI reported.
22 people were injured in the incident on the Ghat road between Chinturu and Bhadrachalam.
The injured were taken to Bhadrachalam Hospital for treatment, District Collector ASR Dinesh Kumar told the daily.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Bardar said the accident took place around 4.30 am on Chintoor-Maredumilli ghat road near Durga temple.
“At least nine people died and 22 were injured when the bus fell off the Ghat road. The bus did not completely dive into the valley. It turned like a turtle… and got stuck,” Bardar told PTI, adding that four of the injured were critical.
The cause of the accident and the identity of the victims are not yet known.
Taking cognizance of the incident, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu said in a post on X, “The accident involving a private bus carrying passengers near Chittoor area of Alluri Sitarama Raju has deeply shaken us. It is heartbreaking that several lives have been lost in this accident. I have spoken to the officials regarding the accident and collected details of the assistance provided to the affected persons to ensure that the affected persons are provided with necessary medical care.” the government will stand by the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.”
In another case of road accident, at least 21 passengers from Tinsukia in Assam are feared dead after an accident in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, an outlet revealed.
Police said 22 passengers from Assam were in a mini truck that fell into a ravine on the Hayuliang-Chaglagam road.
It is feared that 21 people died in the incident while only one survived, Tinsukia District Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar told ANI.
The incident took place on December 8 after the truck skidded off a hilly road. Those in the car were going to Hayuliang for construction work.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a financial compensation of Rs ₹2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund for the kin of the deceased in a road accident. He also announced a ₹50,000 grant for the injured.
