NIMHANS conducts mental health programs in more than 420 governments. universities
To create awareness about mental health policy and institutional role in preventing suicide among students as directed by the Supreme Court, the Department of Higher Education in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) and regional partner institutions conducted a series of one-day orientation programs in various districts of Karnataka.
According to NIMHANS, more than 420 government primary schools and more than 800 principals participated and were oriented in recognizing and responding to students’ mental health problems, strengthening institutional support systems, suicide prevention, mental health promotion, available remote support services and use of digital mental health resources.
The first ‘Abhaya’ program was organized at the NIMHANS Convention Center in Bengaluru on 11th August in association with Government Arts College, Hassan. Students from colleges in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Shivamogga and Mangaluru participated in the first session. Similarly, a second session of ‘Beluguthirali Baduku’ was organized at Kalaburgi on September 2, in which students and principals from Ballari and other districts also participated.
“Jeevanapreeti – Baalige Spoorthi” was the last session held in Dharwad on September 7, which brought together students from Hubballi, Haveri, Gadag and other districts. NIMHANS experts created awareness about the myths and facts related to mental health, developed institutional support systems and the role of institutional leaders and teachers in creating a supportive learning environment.
