Nick Reiner, 32, the son of acclaimed Hollywood director Rob Reiner, appeared in court in Los Angeles on Wednesday (December 17) to face charges of killing his parents. According to the prosecutor’s office, the indictment is scheduled for January 7.
Reiner was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance charge of multiple murders. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
Prosecutors say the charges stem from the stabbing deaths of his 78-year-old father, filmmaker Rob Reiner, and his 70-year-old mother, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Brentwood.
The murders were preceded by an argument
Authorities said Reiner had gotten into an argument with his parents at a Hollywood party the night before the incident. The bodies were discovered on Sunday afternoon by the couple’s daughter. Nick Reiner has a known history of substance abuse dating back to his teenage years.
