NHAI to build 1,692 km of highways to be monetized in FY27, target is ₹35,000 crore | Today’s news

NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has identified 1,692.5 km of national highway stretches across nine states for monetization under Toll-Operate-Transfer (TOT) and Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) routes in FY27, as part of the government’s broader asset monetization strategy.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Thursday, the monetization list does not include assets proposed for monetization through NHAI’s recently launched public InvIT, Raajmarg Infra Investment Trust (RIIT). These assets are expected to be monetized separately at a later stage.

The government raised about 29,000 crore through highway asset monetization in FY26 and is targeting around 35,000 crore in FY27.

The identified sections of the expressway include Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra. NHAI said the assets represent key economic and logistics corridors with established transport potential and strong connectivity.

Some of the sections to be monetized include 52 km Delhi/Haryana border-Rohtak stretch of NH-9 in Haryana, 57 km Hisar-Dabwali stretch of NH-9, 105.5 km UP/Haryana border-Yamunanagar-Saha-Barwala-84 NH3-Panchkula stretch. Hazaribagh-Barhi-Koderma section on NH-20, Madurai-Chettikulam-Natham-Thuvarankurichi section of 61.1 km on NH-785 and Varanasi-Birnon section of 72.2 km on NH-29.

The government said the monetization exercise will be done through transparent and structured mechanisms under TOT and InvIT, which have emerged as key models for attracting long-term institutional investment in highway infrastructure.

The initiative is aimed at unlocking value from operational national highway assets to mobilize capital for further infrastructure development while encouraging private sector participation in the sector. The ministry said the exercise will also help speed up the expansion and modernization of the national highway network.

The ministry added that the monetization pipeline will enable investors and bidders to plan investments more effectively, while supporting NHAI’s broader push to develop a modern and resilient highway network, improve logistics efficiency and enhance connectivity across the country.
