The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started demolition of the upper part of the storm water drainage channels to match the existing road level of the service lanes on the Chennai–Bengaluru highway (NH 48) at Sathuvacari near the Vellore Collectorate. This was done to provide more road space.
NHAI officials said the existing service lanes were not able to accommodate more vehicles, especially during peak hours. This resulted in traffic jams on the route. Traffic snarls on both sides of the service lanes have become regular after they allowed government city buses to use these stretches in the last few months. “After the demolition, new storm water drains will be constructed at par with the existing road level, especially near the underpass at Sathuvacari to avoid traffic jams and accidents,” an NHAI official said.
