The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has assured the Telangana government that widening work on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada section of National Highway 65 (NH-65) will begin by January 2027.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav gave the assurance during a meeting with Telangana Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Monday in New Delhi. NHAI Member (Projects) Vipnesh Sharma also attended the meeting.
Mr. Venkat Reddy urged the NHAI authorities to speed up the tender process and start construction as soon as possible, citing increasing traffic volume and frequent accidents on the highway that connects Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
According to the NHAI chairman, November 11, 2026 is the last date for submission of bids for the project and work is scheduled to start in January 2027.
The proposed project envisages the extension of the existing four-lane highway to a six-lane roadway with service roads on both sides and objects with controlled access. The expansion is expected to reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel times and improve road safety.
The minister emphasized that the highway is a key transport corridor used by thousands of commuters and commercial vehicles every day. He said the widening is necessary to reduce accidents and ensure safer and more comfortable travel between Hyderabad and Vijayawada.
Mr. Venkat Reddy said that road development should not be limited to improving travel facilities but should also focus on protecting lives, promoting commercial activities and strengthening transport connectivity between the two Telugu states.
