New Zealand legislators voted on Thursday to adopt a record suspension of parliament for three legislators who carried out Māori Haka to protest against the proposed law, AP said.
According to the report, Gathering -east – East – Day Ban, while Debbie and David banned 21 days.
According to the details, three days were the longest prohibition of the legislature from the New Zealand parliament.
In November 2024, Hana-rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke and others by the Māori party of Haka were to oppose the controversial proposed law trying to redefine the founding contract between the Māori tribes and the British crown.
Their protest gained global subtitles and triggered months full of debates between lawmakers on the consequences for lawmakers’ actions and instead of Māori culture in parliament.
Recommendations of the Parliament Committee NZ:
In May, the New Zealand parliamentary committee recommended to suspend three members of the Māori parliament for performing Haka protest. Members of Māori protested against the bill, which tried to change the interpretation of this historical agreement.
In April, the parliament in Wellington in Wellington was rejected by the principles of the Waitangi Act.
The Parliamentary Committee decided that Haka could “intimidate” other legislators and recommended a weekly suspension for Maipi-Clarke and a 21-day suspension for the coarse te pāti māori Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer.
New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, who is from Māori’s descent, condemned the actions of the deputies and called them “MPs out of control who deal with the rules and intimidate others with the outrageous Hakas.”
However, the Māori party strongly criticized these recommendations and described them as “a warning shot for all of us to get into the line”. In its statement, the party said, “When the tangata, when resisted, colonial forces reach for maximum punishment,” using the phrase Māori for “people of the earth”. They also noted that these proposed punishments are among the toughest recommended by New Zealand.
