New Zealand coach Rob Walter said the Black Caps are well aware of the threat Harry Brook poses in their must-win T20 World Cup match on Friday, February 27 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Brook was outstanding against Pakistan and became the first captain in the history of the tournament to score a century.
His knock helped England secure a two-wicket victory and advance to the semi-finals. Walter praised Brook’s performance and also recalled his 135-run innings last October in the ODI against New Zealand at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, which featured nine fours and 11 sixes.
“Firstly, it was an amazing innings. I think everyone has been talking and writing about it, there’s no doubt that he’s an exceptional player. He obviously made 100 against us in New Zealand, so we’re well aware of his quality,” Walter said at the pre-match press conference.
The match against Pakistan marked the first time Brook had batted at No.3 for England in limited-overs cricket. However, Walter said New Zealand will not worry about his batting position and will be ready to play him regardless of where he comes up in the order.
“To be honest, his position in the batting order is probably irrelevant; you’ve still got to throw him balls, whether it’s the first over or the 15th. Batting orders can be overstretched at times and I think whatever decision they make, they’ll be ready for it,” Walter added.
Brook was England’s best player at the tournament. In six matches, the right-handed batsman scored 202 runs at an average of 33.66, with a strike rate of 172.64. He ranks as the fourth highest run-scorer overall behind Sahibzada Farhan, Shimron Hetmyer and Pathum Nissanka.
The match is crucial for New Zealand, a win would secure them a place in the semi-finals. However, a loss would leave their fate hanging on the outcome of the clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. While Sri Lanka have been eliminated, Pakistan remain in contention for a top four spot.
