Red Lobster continued to shrink its footprint in 2026 after bankruptcy. According to a report by Inc. the seafood chain’s footprint has shrunk to about 540 restaurants across the United States (US), down from more than 700 before its bankruptcy.
According to a court filing published by Bloomberg, Red Lobster leased 687 locations and spent $190.5 million in lease obligations in 2023 alone before bankruptcy, with many leases priced above market rates. Guest traffic has dropped by 30% between 2019 and 2024.
In May 2024, Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed more than 100 locations that year following its closure. “Ultimate Endless Shrimp” the promotion contributed to an estimated loss of $19 million.
Earlier this week Red lobster announced that it was returning the same promotion after a successful April test. In April, it revived the shrimp promotion as a limited-time offer as the struggling chain struggles to attract diners.
The oldest continuously operating Red Lobster restaurant, located in Tallahassee, Florida, closed in May after 56 years in business. The company called it “a special place in Red Lobster history” that “has been a meaningful part of the community for decades.”
On the same day, the chain also closed locations in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Overland Park, Kansas, and Independence, Missouri.
In June, Red Lobster closed its Times Square restaurant after 23 years, leaving Manhattan without a single Red Lobster location.
According to Inc. the company cited ongoing construction that hurts access and foot traffic, along with the building’s planned conversion to residential apartments, as key factors in the change.
