The New York City mayoral race has reached its final stage, with voting underway ahead of the Nov. 4 election to decide who will become the city’s next leader. At the heart of the New York mayoral race are Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani versus former New York governor and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo versus Republican Curtis Sliwa.
The air is charged as more and more people come out to cast their vote in the New York mayoral election. So far, 734,317 early votes have been cast over the past nine days, according to the New York City Board of Elections. Sunday alone saw a historic turnout of 151,212 early voters, the highest single-day total in city history, according to the New York City Board of Elections.
With the latest polling data, the primary contest is shaping up to be a primary battle between Zohran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is trailing both Cuomo and Mamdani.
Mamdani vs Cuomo – who has the better chance? Pollsters predict
Zohran Mamdani has emerged as the frontrunner in the New York City mayoral race, with two polls showing him leading Andrew Cuomo by double digits.
According to the latest RealClearPolitics average: Zohran Mamdani (Democrat) leads with 45.8 percent support; Andrew Cuomo (independent) trails with 31.1 percent — 14.7 points behind Mamdani; and Curtis Sliwa (Republican) has 17.3 percent support — 28.5 points behind Mamdani.
A recent Quinnipiac University poll found Mamdani leading with 43 percent support compared to Cuomo’s 33 percent, with Republican Curtis Sliwa trailing at 14 percent. On October 10, it showed Mamdani leading with 46 percent support, while Cuomo trailed with the same 33 percent.
Another pollster, AtlasIntel, most accurately placed in the 2024 NYC mayoral race has Mamdani leading with 43.9 percent of the vote (+3.3 since Oct. 30), while Cuomo is close behind with 39.4 percent (+5.4 since Oct. 30).
“With Sliwa down 8.6 percentage points, the gap between Mamdani and Cuomo has narrowed to 4.5 percentage points,” he said.
Mamdani leads with 43.9 percent of the vote
According to a new Suffolk University poll released Oct. 27, Mamdani has 44 percent support among likely voters, while Cuomo trails at 34 percent. In September, a poll in Suffolk showed Mamdani ahead of Cuomo by 20 percentage points.
Mamdani’s comfortable victory over Cuomo in the June primary raised excitement among the more progressive wing of the party and concern among the party establishment.
While no guaranteed outcome can be assumed, it’s starting to look like New York City may have a socialist mayor.
Trump’s latest endorsement
Late Monday, ahead of New York City’s mayoral election on Nov. 4, Republican President Donald Trump endorsed Andrew Cuomo, despite a member of his party running in the polls.
He also threatened to cut federal funds to New York City if Zohran Mamdani is elected to power.

In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump said: “If communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the election for mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will contribute federal funds, other than the minimum amount required, to my beloved first home, because as a communist this once great city has ZERO chance of success or even survival!
Trump also hit out at the Republican nominee when any vote that helped him would help Zohran Mamdani in the New York mayoral race.
“We also have to remember this – A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani. Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice.”
Andrew Cuomo also received an endorsement from Elon Musk. However, it is unclear whether last-minute voter support will make a difference.
Former US President Barack Obama, meanwhile, recently called New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani to praise his campaign and offer to be a “sounding board” in the future.
While Obama did not formally endorse Mamdani, he reportedly told him he was invested in his success after the election.
