New proposal for NH extension in Kottayam

February 19, 2026

Amid efforts to speed up the much-delayed development work of National Highway 183 on the Chengannur-Mundakkayam section, a new proposal has been submitted to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to widen the section from Kottayam city to mile 12 on the KK road.

According to MP K. Francis George, a ₹150 crore project has been proposed to upgrade the stretch from Aida junction to Mannathipara in Kottayam and widen the road to 10m width as per modern standards. Currently, the road is tarred in a width of 6 m. The project will include not only the expansion and modification of the road surface, but also the restoration of dilapidated culverts and the expansion of others. In addition, protective walls will be built where necessary, he said.

To achieve the proposed width of 10 m, it is necessary to measure the existing boundaries of the road and place boundary stones. ₹13 crore has been earmarked for this work. Based on a letter sent to the District Collector by the National Roads Department authorities, an order was issued to complete the survey process immediately.

Boundary stones

Mr. Jiří further stated that after the completion of the survey and the installation of boundary stones, administrative approval will be required, after which the project will be advertised and construction will begin.

NHAI has already started the process to widen the entire stretch from Chengannur to Mundakkayam and a study will be done to widen and upgrade the stretch. The study will be done in three phases with the first phase from Chengannur to Aida Junction (chainage 60 to 106700), the second phase from Aida Junction to Chengal Church on KK Road (chainage 106700 to 137) and the third phase from Chengal Church to Mundakkayam (167 cha to 167 cha).

Due to congestion in the stretch from Aida Junction to Chengal Church and road widening issues in places including Kottayam city, the study will also include assessment of the proposed bypass from Mulankuzha in Nattakom and ending at Mannathipara.
