The new complex housing the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), which is in the final stages of completion, will be named ‘Seva Teerth’.
The complex was previously known as the ‘Executive Enclave’ as part of the Central Vista redevelopment project.
Apart from the PMO, the ‘Executive Enclave’ will also consist of the offices of the Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat and India House, which will be the venue for high-level meetings with visiting dignitaries.
“‘Seva Teerth’ will be a workplace designed to reflect the spirit of service and where national priorities are shaped. India’s public institutions have been undergoing a quiet but profound change,” senior officials said.
There has also been a recent move to rename Raj Bhavans, the residences of state governors, as ‘Lok Bhavans’.
The government also recently renamed Rajpath, the tree-lined avenue from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, as Kartavya Path.
The road that houses the Prime Minister’s official residence was renamed as Lok Kalyan Marg in 2016. The Central Secretariat is called Kartavya Bhavan.
“The idea of governance is shifting from satta (power) to seva (service) and from authority to responsibility,” the officials said, adding, “The change is not just administrative but cultural and moral.”
“Every name, every building and every symbol now points to a simple idea. Government exists to serve,” they said.
“These changes mark a deeper ideological transition. Indian democracy chooses responsibility over power and service over status,” they added.
