As part of its ongoing expansion, the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will get a new air traffic control (ATC) tower.
The new ATC tower will replace the existing one that has been in operation since the airport became operational in May 2008.
In this regard, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has floated a tender.
“The current terminal is almost 18 years old and needs modernization, many facilities and systems need to be updated to meet today’s requirements. Also, the number of air traffic movements has increased significantly over the years and to meet all these requirements, we along with our stakeholders have decided that a new ATC should be commissioned,” a BIAL official told The Hindu.
The official said they are yet to decide whether the new ATC will come up at the new location or the current one.
“If it is decided to be set up at the current site, then the ATC will be demolished and a new one will be built. If that is the case, a temporary ATC would be built for air traffic control. However, all this is still in the preliminary stage and that is why we have issued the RFI,” the official added.
ATC is managed by the Airports Authority of India. KIA is the third largest airport in India and the busiest airport in South India. In the first nine months of 2025, the airport handled 32.4 million passengers. Several expansion projects have been planned for the airport, which include the construction of a second phase of Terminal 2 and a third terminal.
