Netflix Ted Ted Sarandos admitted that in India maybe incorrectly assessed the company’s start strategy and said that the release of sacred games as the first Indian original may not be an ideal starting point.
Speaking of the slower Netflix growth in the Indian market, Sarandos for Nikhil Kamath at his podcast, “It took us several years to put on a market first, like a film star.”
He continued to think about a cultural gap and said, “What is interesting is that it was very, very new, but I did not understand that we were a brand new kind of entertainment in the country of India.”
Sarandos admitted that he could approach a different approach. “If I did it again, I would do sacred games a few years later and instead I did things that were more populist? Maybe.”
Despite the challenges, it remains optimistic about the future. “We knew India would be a slower way to get where we wanted to get. But at the end of the day it is a great price. The addictable market in India is growing in India, so it’s exciting,” he said.
