Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help ensure urgent food and medical hostage treatment held in Gaza, after the creation of disturbing videos showing two of them in a visibly praised state.
According to the Prime Minister’s statement, Netanyahu spoke to Julien Lerisson on Sunday, the ICRC regional coordinator, and called on the organization to intervene in providing assistance to rescue assistance to Israel’s prisoners.
“The Prime Minister asked to engage in food to our hostages and ensuring their immediate medical treatment,” the statement read.
ICRC said it was “horrified by tormenting videos” and repeated his request to give access to all hostages that are still in Gaza.
Distracting shots spark out outrage
The appeal came after the release of videos in recent days by Hamas. The shots showed that the hostages of Rom Braslavski and Ezyatar David looked weak and seriously malnourished. In one particularly worrying clip, David is seen kicking what he claims to be his own grave – the national outrage created and enhances the challenges to a ceasefire.
The Israeli authorities have confirmed that 49 hostages remain in Gaza, of which 27 are considered dead. The hostages were among the 251 people kidnapped during Hamasov on October 7, 2023, a cross -border attack, which, according to Israeli data, left 1,219 people, mostly civilians.
Mass protests and renewed global calls
On Saturdays, tens of thousands of Tel Aviv gathered and demanded that the government should arrange an agreement to liberate the remaining hostages. Netanyahu told the families of Braslavski and David that the government was “shocked” with videos and assured them that “efforts to return all our hostages are taking place”.
