
Twenty people died on Thursday when a jeep carrying pilgrims veered off a hilly road and plunged about 700 meters into a ravine in Nepal’s Rolpa district, police said.
The accident occurred in the Jaljala area of Thawang Rural Municipality when the vehicle skidded on a muddy stretch amid rain and fell down a slope, they said.
According to the police, 20 people died in the accident.
The private jeep was hired by locals who were traveling for the Baisakh Purnima festival in Jaljal on Friday, said police inspector Sunil Thapa Nepali, information officer of the Rolpa district police office.
Rescue operations in the area are being hampered by heavy rain, police said, adding that the exact number of passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident is not yet known.
