Nepal floods update: 275 Indians still missing, 169 rescued; Government says no travelers stranded in Tibet | Today’s news
After more than a week since the devastating flash floods in Nepal, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday shared updates on missing Indian citizens. While 275 Indians remain missing, 166 others have been rescued following floods on the Nepal-Tibet border last month.
1,907 Indians reach Nepal from China after floods: MEA
The Indian government said 1,907 Indians had crossed safely into Nepal from China, leaving no travelers stranded.
MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said India has supplied about 95 tonnes of relief supplies to Nepal since the August 26 flash floods.
275 Indians missing, 166 rescued
“According to our information, 275 Indian nationals are still missing. We continue to be in close contact with the Nepalese government,” Jaiswal said at the latest media briefing.
“We deeply appreciate the efforts of the Nepali authorities in this regard. So far 166 Indian nationals have been rescued and 1,907 Indian nationals have crossed over to Nepal from China safely,” he said.
“According to official sources in China, there are no Indian travelers stranded in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China,” Jaiswal added.
“India will continue to provide aid to Nepal”
The MEA spokesperson said that India will continue to provide assistance to Nepal in this hour of need. “We plan to send more forensic kits, Bailey bridges and other materials requested by the government of Nepal,” he said.
Jaiswal said that India has already delivered around 95 tonnes of relief material for seven aircraft to Nepal. “Apart from humanitarian supplies, we have also deployed 54 personnel to support rescue operations in Nepal. This includes 30 tunnel rescue experts, 19 forensic experts and a five-member medical team. Our rescue and forensic teams are deployed on the ground and are working closely with the Nepali authorities,” he added.
The death toll reached 1,295,5,000 still missing
At least 1,295 people have been killed in floods in Nepal’s districts, Nepali authorities said. Rescuers found several bodies.
More than 12,000 people were rescued from the affected areas. However, nearly 5,000 remain missing as rescue operations are still underway.
The floods have damaged 35 motorable bridges, 45 suspension bridges and 40 km of blacktop roads and affected parts of central Nepal, according to local authorities.
According to a report by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), more than 32,000 people and properties were affected by the flash floods.
A detailed calculation of damages will not be published yet.
The floods were triggered by an ice avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border.
