Nepal floods: 16 more reach Keralam, 45 confirmed safe

Sixteen Keralites, including one of the eight who could not be contacted, have returned home to the state following devastating flash floods in the Nepal-Tibet border region.

It has been ensured that 45 of those who contacted the help desk set up under the auspices of NoRKA-Roots are safe. They have informed relatives that they are safe in Nepal and other places in India and are continuing their efforts to return to Kerala, an update from a help desk set up to provide emergency assistance and information to Keralites stranded in Nepal, he said on Saturday evening.

Rineeth Mohan from Piravom, Ernakulam left for Nepal on 23rd August. He was near Pokhara at the time of the floods but returned home when his relatives informed him about the floods. He lost his phone while traveling to New Delhi and was unable to contact his relatives. He boarded a train from Delhi on Thursday and reached Keralam on Saturday afternoon.

A 14-member group from Kochi is among those who have returned. Sruthi Shikhamani from Kakkanad in Kochi who traveled for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra also returned. She was in Kathmandu at the time of the flood.

There is no information on seven people, including four Malayalis, who are Australian citizens. Their data was passed on to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the instructions of the Chief Minister’s office, NoRKA-Roots arranged for people coming to India from Nepal to travel to Keralam. Contact NoRKA Help Desk or NRK Development Office in Delhi, NoRKA-Roots said in a statement.
