Neeraj Chopra missed the podium as Rumesh Pathirage won the Doha Diamond League title

India’s Neeraj Chopra (PTI Photo) Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra’s long-awaited return to competition ended with a fourth-place finish at the Doha 2026 Diamond League on Friday as Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his remarkable rise to victory in a high-quality field. Making his first appearance in nearly eight months after recovering from a back injury, Chopra showed flashes of his best form but ultimately fell short of the podium. On his third attempt, the 28-year-old fighter showed a maximum of 85.69 meters in the opening season, which ultimately brought him fourth place in the final standings. The evening did not start smoothly for the former Olympic champion. Chopra opened with a foul before gradually getting into a rhythm. After shaking off the rust, he produced his best effort in the third round, a throw of 85.69 meters briefly moving him into the top three. He followed that up with an attempt of 83.45 meters in the fourth round and stayed firmly in contention heading into the fifth. However, as the leading trio moved beyond the 85m mark, Chopra required a throw of over 86m to retain his place in the top three and advance to the final round. Instead, he registered another foul throw, ending his challenge and dropping to fourth place as only the top three finishers advanced to the decisive final trials. Although the result fell short of his expectations, Chopra still achieved an important goal. His performance of 85.69 meters comfortably surpassed the Indian Athletics Federation’s Commonwealth Games qualifying standard of 82.61 meters, boosting his preparations for Glasgow 2026. The Indian star has already been named in the country’s 32-member squad for the Games, which are scheduled for July 23 to August 2. At the top of the standings, Pathirage once again underlined why he is the current world leader. Fresh from his stunning throw of 92.62 meters at the Rome Diamond League earlier this month, the Sri Lankan produced a winning performance of 88.68 meters to secure the title. Anderson Peters from Grenada finished second with the best throw of 86.38 meters, American Curtis Thompson took third place with 85.99 meters. For Chopra, the meeting in Doha was an encouraging first step after a long layoff due to injury. Although a podium finish has proved elusive, India’s javelin ace has shown enough promise to suggest he will be a major contender as the season progresses towards the Commonwealth Games and other major championships later this year.
