Neeraj Chopra has been named in India’s CWG athletics squad despite injury woes
Injured javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been provisionally added to India’s 20-member athletics squad for the Commonwealth Games 2026. The Athletics Federation of India has named a strong contingent led by sprinters Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur, who recently exchanged the national 100m record between them.
The team includes most of India’s big names in athletics, including decathlete Tejaswin Shankar, shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and high jumper Sarvesh Kushar, among others.
A notable omission from the list is 400m specialist Vishal TK, who missed out despite becoming the first Indian to clock sub-45 seconds in the men’s 400m event. Vishal’s national record currently stands at 44.98 seconds, which was 0.02 seconds behind the CWG 2026 qualifying mark set by the Athletics Federation of India.
Indian athletics saw incredible performance from several athletes en route to their selection in the CWG list. During the 2026 Federation Cup held in Ranchi in May, several Indian stars broke national records and surpassed the qualification mark.
Notably, only the javelin bowlers failed to qualify for the CWG 2026 at the Ranchi event and were given one more chance in Jalandhar on June 13 to prove their mettle. Youngsters Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh broke the qualifying mark of 82.61m set by the AFI with their career best throws.
