Since January 2024, there have been nearly 20 reported technical glitches and service interruptions on Bengaluru’s Namma Metro network, with the Purple Line accounting for the highest number of incidents, according to Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.

In a post on Thursday (Jun 25, 2026), Mr Surya raised concerns about the repeated breakdowns, saying the problem was no longer about isolated technical glitches, but pointed to a pattern that raised serious questions about the safety and reliability of metro operations.

He emphasized that the safety of passengers using the Namma Metro must remain paramount and called for greater transparency and stronger oversight.

Mr. Surya said he had consulted metro safety and systems engineering experts before writing a series of recommendations to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) aimed at improving operational safety. He also wrote to the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Southern Circle) urging the authority to take cognizance of the matter and initiate necessary measures to ensure that BMRCL maintains the highest standards of safety.

Mr. Surya’s statement comes after a major disruption on the Purple Line left thousands of commuters stranded in Bengaluru. On Tuesday evening (June 23, 2026), a technical fault in the underground section near Cubbon Park tube station halted peak-hour train services, causing serious inconvenience to passengers and leading to overcrowding at several tube stations. Services were restored the following day.

The glitch was also reported on Thursday evening (June 25, 2026).
