The nationalist democratic progressive party (NDPP), which rules Nagaland in an alliance with Bharatiya Janata aside (BJP), is to be merged with the regional side from which it was divided in 2017.
The merger between NDPP and Front (NPF) NDPP and Front Naga is expected to take place within one week.
On Tuesday (October 14, 2025), NPF formally joined the People’s Democratic Alliance Government led by the main Minister Neiphiu Rio.
“Both parties are connected and we hope it will be announced on October 21,” said NPF legislator Küzholüzo Nienü on Wednesday (October 15, 2025).
NDPP was created by NPF rebel, including Mr. Rio, before the 2017 assembly elections. Although NPF appeared as one largest party, NDPP and BJP continued in the government along with some smaller parties.
As 18 October, and 21st October, NDPP and NPF are scheduled. The merger is expected to be completed after the NPF Convention.
The NPF entry into the Alliance led by NDPP left the Nagaland Assembly without any opposition. NDPP currently has 32 MLA in a 60-member house, followed by BJP with 12 and NPF with five. The remaining MLA, including the independent and those from smaller parties, also support the coalition government.
