The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would retain power in Assam by winning more than 90 seats in the upcoming assembly elections, party leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday (March 28, 2026).
The NDA is contesting all 126 constituencies in Assam. BJP has fielded candidates on 90 seats, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on 26 and Bodoland People’s Front on 11. BJP and AGP will have a friendly contest in Sibsagar seat.

The BJP-led alliance won 75 seats in the 2021 elections, down nine from the 84 it won in the 2016 landmark elections.
Mr Shah said the wind was blowing in favor of the NDA in Assam and the party and its allies would reap dividends from the performance of the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. “The BJP-led NDA government will be formed here for the third term,” Vijay Kumar Gupta told reporters during a roadshow for BJP’s Guwahati Central candidate.
“Assam has seen many changes. Peace accords have been signed with all extremist groups. Today there is no insurgency or extremism in the state and the law and order situation is satisfactory,” he said.
Mr Shah also attributed the pro-NDA sentiment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s infrastructure push in the region. “A semiconductor unit and other industries are coming up in Assam,” he said.
Mr Shah is expected to campaign for two sitting ministers on Sunday (March 29, 2026) – Ashok Singhal in Dhekiajuli constituency in north Assam and Chandra Mohan Patowary in Tihu constituency in west Assam. He is expected to visit Assam in April for the next round of campaigning.
