According to the Crime in India 2024 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on May 6, as many as 313 people were trafficked in Andhra Pradesh in 2024.
A total of 159 cases were registered and most of the women and girls were trafficked for sexual exploitation and forced labour, said N. Ram Mohan, secretary of NGO HELP.
“Of the total 313 victims, 291 were women and girls, of whom 279 were trafficked for sex work. A few were trafficked for marriage, domestic work and other purposes,” Ram Mohan told The Hindu on Thursday.
The NCRB data indicates the severity of exploitation of women and children (girls) and organized prostitution by some gangs in the state, said the HELP secretary, who has been involved in the fight against human trafficking in Andhra Pradesh for the past few years.
There were 23 children among the trafficked persons and the rescue percentage was good, he added. Andhra Pradesh has 13 Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTU) in 26 districts.
Mr. Ram Mohan said that the state ranked third in human trafficking as per the Crime in India 2024 report and there was an urgent need to strengthen vigilance against human traffickers.
“Police should focus on interstate and online prostitution, set up AHTU in all districts, set up fast-track courts for speedy disposal of cases,” a sex-trafficking victim said recently. Steps should be taken to strengthen victim protection and increase conviction rates to check human trafficking cases, said the victim, who prefers anonymity.
