The new Ncert textbooks have been thoughtfully named to mediate the roots in Indian cultures and knowledge systems. The names of books come from Indian languages and not specifically Hindi, the National Council for Educational Research and Training said in an official response to the controversy that broke out due to criticism of Ncert for the use of Hindi titles for English medium books.
In his answer, Ncert said that selected titles did not know linguistic preference, but instead were selected for their cultural, linguistic and pedagogical significance.
“The English textbook for grades 1 and 2 is called” Midang “derived from Midangam, a widely recognized drum instrument associated with Karnatic music,” Ncert said in response.
While the English textbook Ncert is a derivative of the Sanskrit title, the titles of mathematical textbooks for grades 1 and 2 are in English called “Joyful-Mathematics”.
Class 3 textbook for English is called “Santor”, the name of a musical instrument, which is assumed that it is a Persian origin, while a mathematical textbook is called “Maths Mel”, which is the merger of the English and Hindi word. Similarly, the textbook of the Hindi textbooks is called “Veena”, while the Urdu textbook is called “Sitar”.
Titles such as “Santor” are inspired by elements of Indian music heritage, which are ubiquitous across various linguistic and cultural traditions of the country, Ncert said. He also said that titles reflect Indian diversity and unity and support joyful and culturally contextual experience of learning for all students.
Class 6 and 7 for English is called “Poorvi”. For class 6 mathematics, the textbook is called “Ganita Prakash”. Similarly, the textbook of art for the 6th grade is called criti-i, in which “critic” is Sanskrit common noun for creation or work. Ncert said that “Poorvi” is named after the race, traditionally sung at dusk.
A. Sarvanan, a DMK spokesman, said: “In Tamilk we use the word” canak “for mathematics, so that (Ganita Prakash) represents us. BJP is not criticized by a single storage to ensure the same culture… ”.
In response, Ncert said that the textbook of mathematics entitled “Ganita Prakash” is based on a rich Indian mathematical heritage. “The title was chosen to attract the curiosity of children about the rich mathematical heritage of the country.”
He also said, “Having Indian names for mathematics or English textbooks not only supports pride in Indian languages and culture, but also create curiosity about our rich cultural and scientific heritage.”
Some textbooks are named in English – for example, the English class 8 textbook is called “Honeydew”, while the English class 9 textbook is called “Beehive”, while the English textbook of the 10th year is called “First Flight”.
Ncert introduced new textbooks for class 1, 2, 3 and 6 in accordance with the new educational policy. 2020.
