On Thursday, the Indian Navy received an advanced grain with a Himgiri -based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Calcutta.
The Navy called it the main milestone in achieving self -confidence in the design and construction of a war ship. Himgiri (Yard 3022) is the third nilgiri class (project 17a) and the first class built on GRSE. Project 17A frigates are versatile multimisional platforms that are designed to deal with current and future challenges in the naval area.
According to the Navy, Himgiri is the reincarnation of the former INS Himgiri, the Leander class, which was excluded from the 6th May 2025, after 30 years of the famous nation service.
The ship is designed by the Office for the Design of the War Boat (WDB) and under the supervision of a warshop supervising team (Calcata), it is modular, ergonomic and built in the expected time axes.
Hitgiri, which was launched on December 14, 2020, is equipped with Brahmos Anti-Lodi and cruise missiles with ground attackers, along with Barak 8 anti-aircraft missiles, a big jump in naval strike and defensive abilities. With high indigenous content, the ship is as a strong symbol of India’s self -confidence in defensive production.
The Frigata is powered by a combination of diesel engines and gas turbines and equipped with advanced AESA radar and modern combat systems. It is capable of anti-Air, anti-porch and anti-formormarin combat operations. The platform offers advanced survival and improved operating skills.
Himgiri also offers comfortable accommodation for 225 staff and provides full air facilities for the operation of helicopters aboard the ship.
Currently, GRSE is working on 15 warships in four different classes for the Navy.
With a 75%indigenous content, the project included more than 200 mSme per GRSE and enabled a job generation for approximately 4,000 employees directly and more than 10,000 employees indirectly.
