
A 37-year-old man from Maharashtra has been arrested by the Petbasheerabad police in connection with a series of chain robbery cases reported in Hyderabad and neighboring districts, while efforts are on to trace his absconding associate.
The accused has been identified as Hasan Ali, a resident of Nashik. Police said his associate, identified as Mustafa, remains at large.
According to the police, these are habitual criminals with a property history. In similar cases, they have been arrested before, put in jail and later released on bail.
Investigation revealed that the accused was traveling from Nashik to Secunderabad by train with the intention of committing chain-ripping offenses in Hyderabad and surrounding areas. They later proceeded to Nizamabad where they stole a motorcycle from Nizamabad III town police station on the night of 6-7 May.
The accused then traveled to Hyderabad overnight and targeted the women in the early hours of the morning. In Medchal, they snatched a gold chain from a woman and carried out another chain snatching near Dhoolapally T-Junction on the National Highway-44 service road around 6 am.
In the second incident, the accused robbed a woman of her gold wedding chain worth 4 tola before fleeing from the spot.
After committing the offences, the accused abandoned the stolen motorcycle near Gymkhana Grounds in Paradise and returned to Maharashtra.
Based on CCTV footage, intelligence inputs and movement analysis of the stolen motorcycle, police teams traced the accused and arrested Hasan Ali. He managed to recover the stolen motorcycle.
The accused is produced before the court for judicial remand while further investigation is on to trace the absconding accused and recover the stolen gold chain.
