Police investigating the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, searched the septic tank behind her Tucson home on Sunday (Feb. 8) as drone footage reportedly showed detectives opening a hatch in the backyard.
Three detectives were seen poking a long pole into the hatch, although authorities did not say what they were looking for.
Around noon Sunday, two marked sheriff’s cars and another vehicle arrived at Nancy Guthrie’s home. Investigators spent more than 20 minutes in the back of the house before leaving without comment.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen more than a week ago after being dropped off at her home by her daughter Annie Guthrie and son-in-law.
A ransom note will appear
During the investigation, several news outlets reported receiving a ransom demanding $6 million in bitcoins, with one letter containing specific details about Nancy Guthrie’s home. The letters were not verified by the authorities.
Savannah Guthrie addressed the abductors in a social media video flanked by her siblings, saying:
“We received your message and we understand. We are asking you to return our mother to us so we can celebrate with her.”
In another video, she added:
“Only then will we have peace. This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”
An FBI spokesman confirmed the reports had been reviewed and declined to provide further details while the investigation continues.
DNA tests confirmed blood found on Guthrie’s front porch matched hers, supporting investigators’ belief that she was taken against her will.
Health concerns
Authorities have expressed concern for the welfare of Nancy Guthrie. She reportedly requires daily medication, has a pacemaker and previously faced high blood pressure and heart problems.
