Nancy Guthrie kidnapping mystery deepens: Ransom reportedly apologized for her death | Today’s news
A disturbing new report has revealed that one of the ransom notes sent to the family of missing Arizona woman Nancy Guthrie allegedly contained an apology from her alleged kidnapper for accidentally killing her, raising new questions in a case that has gripped the United States for months.
A cold email was sent to the family
According to an Air Mail report, a Feb. 6 email sent to TMZ was traced to the same IP address as earlier ransom communications related to the disappearance of Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie.
Sources familiar with the investigation said the report contained detailed information about the night Guthrie was allegedly abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, including a description of what she was wearing when she disappeared.
Investigators reportedly viewed these details as evidence that the sender may have had direct knowledge of the case.
Initial ransom demand
The alleged kidnapper first contacted the family via a February 2nd ransom note demanding $4 million in bitcoins.
According to the report, the message claimed Guthrie was “safe but scared” and outlined terms for a possible exchange.
The specificity of the communications reportedly convinced investigators that the messages came from someone involved in the disappearance rather than an online fraudster.
Note that the victim is said to have died
The case took a darker turn with the February 6 news.
The report said the email opened with what was described as an incoherent apology for Guthrie’s accidental death.
The sender reportedly suggested that Guthrie’s body could be returned to her family in exchange for a payment, although no specific amount was mentioned.
Authorities reportedly viewed the communication as a significant advance, shifting the focus of the investigation from a kidnapping case to a potential murder investigation.
The emotional public appeal of the family
A day after receiving the alleged email, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings Camron and Annie posted a short video message on Instagram.
In the video, the siblings appeared to be addressing the person behind the communication directly.
“We got your message and we understand,” Savannah Guthrie said.
She then asked for their mother’s return, saying the family was willing to pay to bring her home.
Missing since February
Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Feb. 1, when authorities believe she was abducted from her Tucson home.
Since her disappearance, several ransom messages have been sent to her family and media organizations, including TMZ.
Despite months of investigation, authorities have not announced any arrests, identified a suspect or released any major breakthroughs in the case.
The investigation continues
Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Guthrie’s disappearance and the authenticity of the ransom note.
Officials have not publicly confirmed the content of the reported emails, and no new leads have been reported.
As the search continues, the fate of Nancy Guthrie remains unknown and investigators are still working to determine if she was abducted, killed or remains alive.
