The breakthrough came in the case related to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie with the discovery of a woman’s body along a canal in Phoenix. The development has fueled speculation about a possible connection to the disappearance of Today show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother.
The body was found Friday, more than 100 miles from Tucson, where the 84-year-old went missing in the early hours of February 1. Her family last saw her the day before. The mystery surrounding the suspected abduction of Nancy Guthrie remains unsolved to this day, with this new information seen as a key update to the case.
As authorities work to establish a connection between the dead body and Nancy Guthrie, police said in a statement: “Call details indicated an adult female was unresponsive on the bank of a nearby canal. Police said: ‘When officers arrived, they found a female who was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.’
However, Phoenix police have not yet released any identifying information about the discovery of the dead woman. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that they had not been notified that there was any connection to the Guthrie case, Fox News Digital reported.
In a post on X shared on March 5, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department wrote, “Black gloves found about 3 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home have been traced through DNA to an employee of a local restaurant. That person is not part of this investigation. Laboratory analysis of additional DNA evidence is ongoing.”
A few days ago, Savannah Guthrie made an emotional plea on social media. Savannah pleaded for her mother’s return and offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the safe return or recovery of Nancy Guthrie. In addition to this private reward, an FBI reward of $100,000 remains active.
Nancy’s doorbell records picked up a suspicious person loitering on her doorstep. A masked man – possibly two suspects – one with a backpack and one without, is believed to be connected to her abduction. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) previously released a statement about the recovered security footage. “There is no date or time stamp associated with these images. Therefore, any suggestion that the photos were taken on different days is purely speculative,” it said.
A large amount of evidence recovered from the home, including traces of blood, is still being investigated. However, the PCSD said it could take up to “a year” to analyze all the evidence recovered from Nancy’s home, including traces of blood, particularly samples containing DNA.
According to the New York Post, the investigation remains very active, with approximately 300-400 personnel still assigned to the case.
