BJP chief Nitin Nabin on Wednesday (March 25, 2026) alleged that a “double standard” prevailed in West Bengal over permission for religious activities, asserting that while namaz can be offered freely in the state, court approval is required to organize pujas or erect pandals.

Speaking to reporters after prayers at the Dakshineswar temple on the outskirts of Kolkata, Mr Nabin said the situation was “unfortunate”.
“There is permission to offer namaz here, but permission needs to be sought from the Supreme Court to perform puja and erect pandals,” he claimed.
Mr. Nabin said he prayed to Goddess Kali for happiness, peace and prosperity of the people of the State.
“I offered puja at Dakshineswar and sought the blessings of the goddess for the welfare of the people of the state and for building ‘Viksit Bengal’ and ‘Sonar Bangla’,” he said.
