BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran has accused the TVK government of allowing “religious politics” to enter the Tamil Nadu Assembly, saying the dignity and neutrality of the House has been compromised.

In a post on social media platform X, Mr. Nagenthran criticized Speaker JCD Prabhakar for openly identifying with a particular religion and seeking reservation for a section of that religious community when he occupies the Speaker’s seat.

He said the constitutional position of the Speaker required him to remain above caste and religious considerations.

Mr. Nagenthran also alleged that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had envisioned the TVK government as one that favors minorities since assuming office.

Referring to ministers who have brought religious references into the proceedings of the assembly, he said Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson arrived with a rosary while presenting the budget, spoke of her Christian faith and quoted Bible verses in the House.

Mr. Nagenthran said he did not question anyone’s personal religious beliefs and said that bringing such beliefs into the proceedings of the Assembly could undermine the dignity of the legislature and create an impression of favoring a particular religion.

He urged the TVK Speaker and Ministers to refrain from bringing personal caste and religious matters into the Assembly and instead promote the neutrality and dignity of the House.
