Credentials shared through Aadhaar app valid as proof of identity: All you need to know
In an official statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said, “In accordance with Unique Identification Authority of India (Aadhaar Usage Division) Circular No. HQ-30011/3/2025-AU-HO dated 30th April 2026, it is hereby informed that as a step to improve digital accessibility, UIDAI has launched Aadaradha Appar’Aadha App New Aadhaar’Aadha App Verifiable credentials displayed, shared and/or verified through the ‘Aadhaar App’ will now be treated as valid proof of identity.”
He added, “All concerned Ministries/District Administrations/Executive Agencies across the State are requested to ensure strict compliance and acceptance of verifiable Aadhaar credentials displayed, shared and/or verified through the ‘Aadhaar App’ as a valid proof of identity for the purpose of ascertaining the identity of Aadhaar holders.”
According to the Department of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), the directive comes after a circular was issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Aadhaar Usage Division, as part of efforts to boost digital accessibility. UIDAI’s Aadhaar app, available for Android and iOS, allows users to present, share and verify their identity digitally.
The Aadhaar app also gives Aadhaar holders the option to share their full or partial identity details in the form of verifiable Aadhaar credentials. Identity information shared through the Application is legally binding under the Information Technology Act 2000, which recognizes records in electronic form.
The department has clarified that sharing identity details with an offline verification seeking entity (OVSE) through the app does not transmit the full 12-digit Aadhaar number of the holder. It further states that digital credentials presented through the application are another accepted form of identification. UIDAI has clarified that they have the same validity as existing Aadhaar formats, including Aadhaar letter, e-Aadhaar, masked e-Aadhaar, Aadhaar PVC card and m-Aadhaar.
The center proposes changes in the identification for beneficiary payments
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh further said that beneficiaries of several schemes who receive payments based on their Aadhaar numbers will soon have to use their Biometrics and Electoral Numbers (EPIC) to receive payments. Singh, Minister for Panchayati Raj, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Products, made the remarks on October 30 while inaugurating the National Workshop on the People’s Plan 2026-2027 campaign, The Indian Express reported.
He also hinted at changes in how beneficiaries will be verified and payments processed, saying biometric authentication and voter ID EPIC numbers will be used instead of Aadhaar to determine their identity.
