The district and city unit of the Congress paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary on Friday.
Addressing the gathering, Minister for Minor Irrigation and Science and Technology S. Boseraju described Indira Gandhi as a symbol of strength who laid the foundation for women’s active participation in Indian politics.
Mr. Boseraju said that at a time when women’s freedom issues were serious issues, India Gandhi not only led the Congress but became the Prime Minister of the country. Her leadership and remaining in the position of prime minister is a milestone in the country’s political history, the minister said. Her assassination on this day in 1984 remains one of the nation’s darkest days, Mr Boseraju added.
Other speakers described Indira Gandhi as an intelligent and courageous woman who faced countless challenges and overcame them. Indira Gandhi’s social welfare programs such as the Twenty Point Program have been recalled and described as policy initiatives that ushered in a ray of hope among the poor and downtrodden in the country.
The program was attended by R. Murthy, President, Mysuru City Congress Committee; BJ Vijay Kumar, District Congress Committee President and other party functionaries.
