
The enforcement unit of the Department of Motor Vehicles (MVD) here punished 174 autorickshaw drivers with fines for violating road traffic rules. As many as 365 autorickshaws operating night services in the city were intercepted by six squads as part of the drive, according to the release.
Of the violators, 72 were booked for performing services without turning on the fare counter. Twenty vehicles from Kottayam, Idukki and Alappuzha were impounded for plying in the city without permission. Other offenses found include missing medical certificates and valid permits, failure to pay road tax and insurance premiums and driving without a licence. A tricycle without a license plate and one with high beams were also found.
The special drive was conducted as part of the National Road Safety Month on the instructions of District Collector G. Priyanka. Regional Transport Officer Biju Issac said night checks would continue in the coming days.
