MV Govindan demands Kerala govt to waive fuel tax revenue amid rising fuel price
Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) State Secretary MV Govindan on Tuesday demanded that the state government waive fuel tax revenue to ease the suffering of people facing a sharp rise in fuel prices in recent weeks. He accused Chief Minister VD Satheesan of playing opportunistic politics as he had taken a stand as the Leader of the Opposition that the government should give up fuel tax revenue.
“Fuel prices have gone up four times since the United Democratic Front (UDF) government took over. In the past, Mr. Satheesan had even staged a protest by cycling from Cantonment House to the Assembly demanding that the state government give up fuel tax revenue. But now, despite this huge increase, he is silent. The state government still gets ₹2 as additional fuel revenue from the sale of one liter of fuel. 2018, he decided to give up a portion of these revenues,” said Mr. Govindan.
He said that the Union Government had not taken any steps to face the crisis arising out of the war situation in West Asia. The increase in commercial LPG prices by ₹ 1,544 in just 4 months has also caused difficulties for schools that provide mid-day meals. Prices are also rising in restaurants. The UDF government did not criticize any of the BJP-led Union government’s policies in the Governor’s policy speech. The LDF will organize a protest in front of Union government institutions in all districts on Thursday, he said.
Mr. Govindan alleged that the Governor had appointed the head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) teachers’ union as the Vice-Chancellor in charge of the Mahatma Gandhi University. “His only merit is his affiliation with the Sangh Parivar. The UDF government facilitated his appointment by not submitting a panel of candidates on time. Three names were submitted during the tenure of the LDF government. This appointment is proof that the UDF is implementing the Sangh Parivar agenda,” he said.
