(Getty Images) Former Indian Captain Sourav Gangules on Thursday supported the decision to pass Indian captain Odi to Shaubman Gill and described it as “fair call and not the worst decision”. The gangules suggested that this step was probably taken with respect to the age and the fact that the ODI World Cup was gone for two years. “I think it was done after consultation with Rohit, from the outside … I don’t know what’s inside,” said ganguly at a recent event. “Somewhere down the line, I feel it is a fair call. Rohit can play and in the meantime a constantly caring young captain. So I really don’t see a problem.”

India will play three ODI in Australia from October 19, followed by a series of five T20i matches from October 29. The decision of the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is also considering the World Cup 2027 in South Africa, when Rohit will be more than 40 and Virat Kohli 38. “In the last two years, the T20 World Cup has won (Rohit). He won the championship trophy. So the performance is not a problem with Rohit Sharma,” Ganguly said, as PTI quoted. “But when they go by 2027 in South Africa, he will be 40 years old. And that’s a big number in sports. And he played so long. So I don’t think anyone would be sure if Rohit would really play if he was 40. About the future of Rohit and Kohli in the national arrangement, the gangules emphasized the importance of domestic cricket. “Yes, 40 is a lot of age. It depends on it – how the fit remains, how much cricket plays and how many races scores … whether there is an opportunity, they have to play home cricket. Because cricket is a sport where you have to play – otherwise you lose touch and form and contact.” The ganguly turned to Gill and appreciated the 26-year performance during the Indian series of five tests in England, scoring 754 runs with four centuries, in 1990 Graham Gooch’s 752 and Sunil Gavascar 732 as a captain against West India in 1978-79.

Do you support the decision to appoint SHUBMAN GILL for Captain Odi?
“For touring after England, I thought he was brilliant. I saw a series of five tests. The way he played and the way the team captain is extraordinary. Therefore, he became the captain of the ODI team for the future.
