The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to begin basic maintenance work on critical components of Mumbai’s water distribution system. Water supply is expected to drop by 5% over the eight-day period, Mid-Day reported.
Key tunnels that ensure a stable supply of water to various parts of the financial capital will undergo maintenance during this period. Civic officials suggested that the planned works would include processes such as charging, flushing, chlorination and dechlorination of Water Tunnel No. 1 (AMT-1) and Water Tunnel No. 2 (AMT-2).
Water Tunnel No. 1 supplies water from Amar Mahal (Hegdewar Garden) to Wadala (Pratiksha Nagar). From this central point it is further directed to Parel (Sadakant Dhavan Garden). Meanwhile, Water Tunnel No. 2 supplies water from the Amar Mahal to the low-level and high-level Trombay reservoirs.
Dates of interruption of water supply
These planned works will affect the water supply in several parts of the city and its eastern suburbs from 20 April to 27 April.

The key localities that will be affected by this supply disruption include L (Kurla East), M East, M West, N, S and T wards. Apart from these eastern suburbs, the parts of South and Central Mumbai that will face water shortages are A, B, C, E, F North and F South wards.
The BMC advised residents in the affected areas to exercise restraint in water usage as they sought the cooperation of Mumbaikars during the maintenance period.
The upcoming maintenance activity follows the recent installation of two 1500 mm throttle valves on a tunnel water pipeline located along Haji Bunder Road in F South district near Sewri. Bhardavada Hill Reservoir, Phosberry Hill Reservoir and Golnaji Hill Reservoir are the key reservoirs that provide water supply along this canal. A water advisory dated April 10 proposed an 18-hour supply interruption from 10:00 a.m. on April 16 to 4:00 a.m. on April 17.
On April 15, the BMC shared a video showing the ongoing sewage works in Usha Nagar. The caption of the post on X reads: “The work of de-silting various drains in the Mumbai metropolitan area is progressing rapidly. The process of de-silting the Usha Nagar sewer flowing under the Central Railway line at Bhandup West using a robotic machine ‘Swing Loader’ is on track.”
