Operations of monorail in Mumbai will be deprived of an indefinite period of September 20 to allow extensive upgrades of the system, signaling integration and renovation of the fleet, announced on Tuesday in the Metropolitan Metropolitan Office for the Development of the Region (MMRDA).
Why are Bombai monorail services suspended?
Temporary suspension will affect services along the entire road 19.74 kilometers between Chembur and Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Saat Rasta). According to MMRDA, this step is necessary to perform continuous extensive testing, installation of advanced signaling systems and complete overwork of aging trains.

“This planned block will allow faster integration of new rolling vehicles, advanced CBTC signaling improvements and the reconstruction of the existing fleet will ensure safer, smoother and more reliable operations for Bombaikar,” the agency said in its official statement.
Currently, maintenance and upgrade work is limited to a narrow 3.5 -hour night window when the electrical lines are turned off and discharged. The Office explained that this timeframe is insufficient for comprehensive control of systems and installation of modern infrastructure.
What upgrades are they with Mumbai monorail?
The upcoming modernization will focus on three critical areas:
The introduction of a new war: Ten new train players in cooperation with SMH Rail are acquired as part of the “Make in India” initiative. Eight rake has already been delivered, the ninth passes through the inspection and the tenth is in the final assembly.
Advanced CBTC signaling system: Train control system (CBTC) is originally developed in Hyderabad and will be first deployed on Mumbai monorail. The signaling work has been completed and integrated testing is underway.
Reconstruction of the fleet and workforce training: Existing players will undergo the reconstruction in full, while employees will complete specialized training to prepare for future metro operations.
MMRDA stressed that these steps are aimed at making the network “safer, more reliable and ready for the future”.

Safety concerns after recent technical failures in a monorail on Mumbai
The decision to suspend services in recent months monitors a number of technical defects and incidents of passenger security.
On Monday, the monorail train suddenly stopped between the Antop Hill Bus Depot and the GTBN station in Wadale for technical capture, so that 17 passengers were stuck until they were safely rescued.
Formerly 19th August, heavy rain caused two separate disorders, which had over 780 passengers stuck for several hours. In one case, 582 passengers were stuck near Mysore Colony, while 200 others were imprisoned at Acharya Atre Nagar. Emergency teams, including the fire brigade in Mumbai, faced significant challenges that evacuated passengers in the middle of the downpour.
After these incidents, MMRDA introduced immediate safety measures such as removing passengers from crowded trains at various stations to prevent overload.

Committee for Investigation for Investigation of Failure
MMRDA confirmed that he created a special committee for investigating the main causes of these recurring technical problems. The Committee will carry out a detailed review of the equipment, maintenance processes and operational protocols to prevent similar disturbances in the future.
“We are determined to restore public confidence in a monorail system,” Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Commissioner MMRDA. “This suspension is a carefully thought out step to make the service safer and reliable.”
MMRDA refers to public cooperation
Local Minister Maharashtra and chairman of MMRDA EKNATH Shinde urged Mumbaikary to cooperate during the transition period.
“We will bring a monorail back in a stronger form with the cooperation of bombicars,” Shinde said, stressed that the planned upgrades are necessary for long -term sustainability.
MMRDA did not provide the timeline where they will restore the services but confirmed that the work will continue continuously until all installations and security checks are completed.

Mumbai Monorail: Indian single system of its kind
Mumbai’s Monorail, which was launched in February 2014, remains the only Indian operating monorail network. The first section of 8.26 kilometers was opened this year by another extension of 11.28 kilometers in March 2019 and finished the way from Chembur in the eastern suburb to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk in Ostrovní Město.
The system is currently working with only five active toys, emphasizing the urgency of adding new trains to satisfy the growing demand of commuters.
What do the commuters need to mumbai
- Last Operational Day: Friday, September 19, 2025
- Complete shutdown from: Saturday 20th September 2025 until the next announcement
- Disabled route: Chembur to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk, both instructions
- Reason: Fleet repair, CBTC signaling, and infrastructure integration
Commuting is advised to look for an alternative travel arrangement, especially during the top hours, as there will be no partial services available during suspension.
