
The Bombay Customs Department was seized ₹In recent days, rare gold worth 2 million crowns. The smugglers tried to smuggle in 24 KT gold dust weighing 2,270 kilograms but were intercepted at a security check at the Mumbai airport as they tried to evade detection. The intricately wrapped precious metal did not escape detection and was seized by screening agents.
In a post on X, Mumbai Customs said: “During duty from 15th to 17th December 2025, officers of the Airport Commissionerate in Mumbai Customs Zone – III made significant seizures. A total of 8,467 kg of hydroponic weed and 2.2 KT of gold valued at 2.2 dg were seized from one passenger arriving from Bangkok 2,89,73,690/- and 230 grams of 24KT gold worth 29,35,660/- seized in 3 different cases involving transit passengers and airport staff A total of 5 passengers were arrested in connection with these cases.
The Central Bureau of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) under the Ministry of Finance has issued some guidelines for travelers regarding duty free allowances, restricted and prohibited items. The import of gold into India is governed by the Customs Act, 1962, which regulates the movement of goods across Indian borders. Travelers must follow the guidelines issued by the CBIC while bringing gold into India to avoid hassles at the airport.
As per current regulations, Indian travelers can carry a certain amount of gold jewelery duty free. While men can wear ornaments worth up to 20 grams, not exceeding ₹50,000 in total value, for women the limit is 40 grams, it does not exceed ₹1,00,000 in total value. Duty-free allowance or claims do not apply to gold or silver in any form other than ornaments. At this point, the most important question arises as to who can import gold as baggage.
Gold as luggage?
“Eligible Traveller” means any traveler of Indian origin or a traveler holding a valid passport issued under the Passports Act, 1967, who arrives in India after a period of stay abroad of at least six months. However, short visits during these six months will be ignored if the total duration of such short visits does not exceed 30 days and the traveler has not used this short period under the exemption regime, without exception. other passengers are allowed to import gold in luggage,” the gold import guidelines state.
