Mudslide victims in Kerala’s Idukki district to receive ₹10 crore as compensation

The government will distribute ₹10 crore as compensation to the Adimaly mudslide victims ahead of Onam, Revenue Minister AP Anilkumar said.

The minister announced the compensation after attending a review meeting of the revenue department at the Idukki Collectorate on Monday.

Sources said 17 families affected by the Adimaly landslide last month protested and demanded compensation. The Revenue Minister’s announcement comes as a big relief to families.

A mudslide that occurred at Koompanpara on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway on the night of October 25, 2025 claimed the life of Biju, a resident of Laksham Veedu Colony and seriously injured his wife Sandhya. On 28 October 2025, doctors were forced to amputate Sandhya’s left leg due to the severity of her injuries.

After the incident, the Ministry of Finance identified 27 families in the area living under the imminent threat of further mudslides. Nine homes were destroyed, officials said, while others remained at high risk, prompting authorities to move families into rented accommodation as a precaution.

The finance ministry has promised to provide up to ₹15,000 per month to cover the rent. However, due to the long delay in rent payments, the displaced families launched a protest demanding immediate release of rent charges and a comprehensive relief package.

The government had earlier allocated ₹10 lakh each to families whose houses were completely demolished. The owners of the 17 threatened houses are demanding the same compensation package as recommended by the district collector in a detailed proposal submitted to the government.
