On Wednesday (October 1, 2025), the government announced a 6.59% increase in minimum support price (SME) for wheat to 2,585 GBP for Quinttal for 2026-27 marketing year.
The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Last year, the MSP wheat was set at 2,425 GBP for Quinttal for 2025-26.
Wheat is the main rabbi (winter) crop, while sowing since the end of October, while harvesting from March further. Other crops Rabi include jaw, barley, gram and lens.
Media briefing after the cabinet meeting, Minister of Information and Ashwini Vaishnaw said: “The cabinet approved the SME of six rabbi crops for 2026-27 marketing year. Wheat MSP was set at RS 2 585 on Quintal.”
The wheat marketing year 2026-27 will start from April. However, most contracts end in June.
The MSP was decided on the recommendation of the Commission for Agricultural Cost and Price (CACP), the Minister said.
The government set a record goal of wheat production of 119 million tonnes per 2025-26 (July-June), as opposed to actual production estimated at a record 117.5 million tonnes per 2024-25.
