Health Minister Veena George said the state government has spent a lot of money to provide free treatment to the public.
The minister virtually inaugurated the newly constructed super-specialty mother-child unit along with other projects at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kalamassery on Tuesday.
The new block, which has 850 beds, was built at a cost of ₹ 285.31 crore to provide high-quality treatment to pregnant women and children, the minister said.
Along with the Mother and Child Super Specialty Block, an Indian Council of Medical Research funded microbiology laboratory capable of performing level 2 virological testing; 12 salary departments; a cosmetology dispensary equipped with state-of-the-art equipment under the skin department, set up in collaboration with BPCL; and a shed with more parking spaces was also inaugurated.
The minister said many achievements have been made possible in government hospitals, including bone marrow transplants, innovative research into cancer treatment, liver transplants and free rare disease treatment for children under five.
Industries Minister P. Rajeeve presided. He also highlighted the new KSRTC bus service to Kalamassery Medical College Hospital on the Idukki-Kattappana route.
