Most of the 19 victims who lost their lives in Monday morning’s bus-truck collision near the Mirjaguda-Khanapur road in Chevella mandal, Ranga Reddy district, suffered fatal head injuries and multiple traumas, according to forensic experts who conducted the post-mortem. Preliminary reports also revealed no signs of intoxication in either driver, they said.
A doctor from Osmania General Hospital (OGH), who was part of the medical team sent from Hyderabad to the Chevella Community Health Center (CHC), described the situation on the ground as deeply disturbing. “90% of the victims suffered head injuries and multiple injuries. There was also an infant who is suspected to have died as a result of suffocation, although the exact cause can only be confirmed after the final report,” the doctor said.
He also confirmed that the preliminary examination revealed no signs of intoxication in any of the drivers, although the final toxicology results will be confirmed by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
Shortly after the accident, Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha, Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Sangeetha Satyanarayana and Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) Commissioner Dr. Ajaya Kumar to monitor the situation. Officials remained at the hospital until all the autopsies were completed and the bodies were handed over to the families.
Forensic teams from Hyderabad worked closely with local doctors at Chevella CHC to complete the autopsy. Initially, authorities planned to shift the bodies and injured to Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad. However, the plan was later revised, with the post-mortem conducted at CHC Chevella itself and treatment of the injured continuing at nearby hospitals.
“The local staff started the process even before our arrival. We dealt with the cases involving the drivers and those sitting near them, while the local doctors attended to the passengers whose causes of death were obvious,” the doctor explained.
All 19 autopsies were completed by Monday afternoon. “While the cause of death is apparent, procedures are being carried out for insurance and medico-legal documentation,” he added.
Meanwhile, 14 injured individuals, eight men and six women, are undergoing treatment at the Patnam Mahender Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences. Their injuries included head injuries, nosebleeds, facial injuries, rib fractures, head lacerations and broken bones. One patient, identified as 21-year-old Rebariboni Nandhini, was shifted to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, for further treatment.
“All the injured are in a stable condition,” said Ranga Reddy District Medical Officer and Health Officer (DMHO) Venkateshwar Rao.
