A total of 867 motorists were booked for drink driving in Hyderabad and Cyberabad during special enforcement drives last weekend.
In Cyberabad, the traffic police registered 407 offenders. Most of the offenders, 158, were in the 21-30 age group, while 147 fell in the 31-40 category. Interestingly, six offenders over the age of 61.
During the previous week of December 8 to 13, 385 drink driving cases were dealt with in the courts, with 16 offenders fined and jailed, 21 fined with community service and 348 fined.
Meanwhile, traffic police in Hyderabad conducted a two-day special drive on December 12 and 13 during which 460 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Officials have warned that if a drunk driver causes a fatal accident, the person will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with manslaughter not amounting to murder and carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in jail with a fine.
