
More than 70 persons were injured during crackers bursting on Deepavali day in Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai and Tirupattur districts.
Health officials said the injured persons were being treated at government hospitals in these districts till 7 am on Tuesday. Among the injured, many patients were treated for burns, eye injuries and minor trauma due to firecracker accidents.
Most of the incidents happened in densely populated cities like Vellore, Arcot, Arakkonam, Cheyyar and Tiruvannamalai due to crowds. “Nine persons, including one child with about 40% burns, were treated at the hospital for burns. Six of them are men,” J. Usha Nandini, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Government Taluk Hospital, Walajah, told The Hindu.
Health officials said the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai town reported the highest number of 50 cases of cracker burns at 7 am on Tuesday, the day after Deepavali in the region. Of these, 25 patients, including 12 children, are treated on an outpatient basis (OP). Among the hospitalized patients, the hospital referred 12 of them to other government hospitals like Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Nine patients including four outpatients were treated at the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital. Apart from the child, the rest of the treated patients were men. Hospital emergency units were prepared for the expected rush of patients due to the festival.
The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department has organized safety campaigns and awareness drives to minimize accidents. Police and civic officials also advised residents to exercise caution, use designated open areas for fireworks and supervise children while bursting crackers.
