More than 60 people fell ill after consuming prasada during Ramnavami celebrations on Saturday in Bettenahalli village, Devanahalli taluk in Bengaluru rural district.
About 400 people drank the prasada in the morning, several of whom started experiencing symptoms such as abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhea after 10 hours. “Around 60 reported symptoms since 1 am on Sunday and all are out of danger,” Bengaluru Rural District Health Officer (DHO) Lakka Krishna Reddy told The Hindu.
He said most of the affected were treated at Aradeshanahalli Primary Health Center in Devanahalli while some were taken to nearby private health facilities. Dr. Reddy said several of those who were admitted as in-patients were treated and discharged, while around 14 persons were treated in private facilities.
Medical teams rushed to the spot and started treatment measures. Food samples, including “kalu prasada”, were collected and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis to find out the exact cause of the illness, he said.
The DHO said the situation is under control and no serious complications have been reported so far. Further investigation is underway.
