A little over 50,000 graduates received their degrees at the 38th Convocation of Tamil Nadu Medical University Dr. MGR which was held in the city on Friday.
Among them were 12,016 medical students, 2,569 dental students, 3,269 Ayush students and 32,305 nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and allied health sciences students.
A total of 353 gold and silver medals, endowment certificates and university medals were presented to 237 applicants. Notably, S. Swetha, an MBBS graduate from Kilpauk Medical College, won nine medals.
A total of 66 candidates were awarded Ph.D. degree.
P. Grizelda Evangeline, a cochlear implant patient, received a certificate from the Governor for securing the highest grades in the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT), an advanced OT in pediatrics. She underwent the surgery at the Madras ENT Research Foundation in 2007 when she was two years old.
Addressing the students, RK Dhiman, Director, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, urged them to focus on cultivating discipline, right attitude and consistency in work. According to him, medicine is not only about curing disease, but also about curing people. “Medicine is a pure science, but the delivery process is a pure art,” said Dr. Dhiman and urged students to also focus on developing strong and effective communication skills.
K. Narayanasamy, Vice-Chancellor of the Medical University of Dr. MGR, while presenting the annual report said that apart from regular courses through its 844 affiliated colleges, the university offers direct courses through Institute of Transfusion Medicine and Epidemiology which are PG courses in Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion, Masters courses in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Diplomacy.
In addition, the university has established six regional centers at a cost of ₹16 crore, with four of them dedicated to nursing with simulation laboratories and two others equipped with advanced research laboratories for pharmacy.
