
Up to 47 Indian fishermen were arrested and their five trawlers were seized on Thursday in Talaimannar, North Sri Lanka, for alleged participation in illegal fishing in the island nation’s waters, the Navy in Colombo said.
The arrest was carried out during coordinated patrols carried out in the Mannar and Delft Sea areas.
“47 arrested fishermen and their equipment will be handed over to the fishing inspectorate in the north for the next event,” the Navy quoted by the PTI news agency.
The maritime command operation for their arrest began late at night and lasted until the first hours on Thursday, said Navy spokesman Buddika Sampath.
The problem of fishermen remains a controversial problem in bilateral ties in India-Srri-Lanka, while the Navy staff even shoots at Indian fishermen in the Pank Strait and catches his ships in several alleged incidents
Last month, 12 Indian fishermen were arrested and their ship seized near Jaffna in Northern Sri Lanka.
